Review: Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay In Place Makeup

Estee Lauder's Double Wear is a foundation that possibly everyone has heard of at one time or another. I've heard it's very long wearing and provides excellent coverage. So I had to give it a try. I put it to the test for a couple of weeks and here we go with the review. Coverage is phenomenal on this, although it is quite drying on my dry skin and not a foundation that I would recommend wearing everyday. It's stubborn to take off too as it clings to your skin. I ran out of makeup wipes (first step in my makeup removal routine) and I was using face wash and could still feel this stuff on, I then opted for my eye makeup remover (and cotton pads) and wasted a ton trying to get this off, shows you how long-wearing it is! I think a cleansing oil would be beneficial to use to remove this, if you guys have any other suggestions please let me know. I hate having foundation residue on my face after I cleanse it.

The foundation comes in a pretty heavy, frosted glass bottle, no pump on this baby, but the MAC foundation pump fits perfectly on this, just trim the end a bit (as this bottle is shorter). I haven't bought one yet, but I intend to. The description on the back of the box reads  "For all skintypes, this remarkable lasting, yet lightweight makeup wears comfortably for up to 15 hours, even in high humidity. Won't smudge or come off on clothes. Oil-free, fragrance -free, non-acnegenic, dermatologist and ophthalmologist-tested." I would say this is better for oily skin, as it doesn't provide substantial moisture for my skin, which I look for in a foundation.

I have this in the shade "1W2 Linen 18". My understanding is this is the second lightest shade in the warm tone. Estee Lauder has a pretty good colour selection with warm, cool and neutral tones. I probably should of gone with a neutral tone, but this was the one I was matched with earlier at the Estee Lauder counter, I find counters tend to match me too dark. I would suggest going in and getting a sample before purchasing this foundation, also for all foundation shade questions, consult Temptalia's foundation matrix.

The coverage is medium-full, this gives coverage comparable to that of MAC's Studio Fix Fluid and also has a similar smell, not as gross as MAC's foundations, but not pleasant in my opinion. That's cat scratches on my hand in case you were wondering.

Here it is blended in slightly, it's very pigmented and opaque, this covers my redness well and evens out completely. You could do more than one layer and get full coverage, but it does tend to give a mask-like effect if you overdo it, you can always sheer this out by using a sponge or your fingers. The finish is matte, which can wash you out or be very obvious if you don't have the right colour match. This may feel thick on those who are not used to full coverage foundations. However, I do think Double Wear is like the superhero of foundations, coming to save the day, it's the no fuss excellent coverage, transfer proof, flawless face product.

This is the first Estee Lauder foundation that I've ever used and was pleased with the result. If you are interested in their foundations, the Pixiwoo girls on Youtube did a great overview on their channel (link above) that is definitely great to check out, they go over skintypes and coverage of many.

Disclaimer: Foundation was purchased on Apothica.com, a sponsor which has offered to do a giveaway with myself, please look out for that soon.

Have you tried Estee Lauder Double Wear?

Thats a great review, i have been eyeing this foundation from quite sometime ,i have ordered twice from apothica and i also checked this out but i was confused about the shade so i had pass :( what MAC shade are you? what shade would you suggest for NC 35?

Justine (Productrater) said... Best Blogger Tips

@ Sarah - I am NC15, pale, prefer yellow tones to my foundation. Did you check out the foundation matrix? I see that NC35 suggests sand or tawny in double wear. Hope that helps.

oh i love this make up..it is perfect for my skin!

I have this in sand and this is just amazing.

I find it too thick for my liking though and so I make sure I mix a teeny bit of the foundie with my moisturizer to thin it out. It glides on my skin better this way and dries out a little less matte and more natural on my face.

Thanks for the review, I think I might have to give this foundation a try, one thing I hate about foundations is that they transfer to clothes but this one sounds pretty heavy duty. Are you planning on trying the L'oreal Smooth Mousse Souffle foundation? I really want to try it out because I heard its comparable and better than the Dream Smooth Mousse and thats my favourite drugstore one.

@Lisa - I was intrigued by that loreal mousse souffle stuff, but I am more on a high-end foundations kick right now, it seems really expensive for drugstore around here anyway.

I used to work part time @ Lauder and my counter manager would want me to put this on EVERYONE that came in for a makeover or foundation test. It was so ridiculous because the coverage is pretty serious business, haha! I did like to use it on girls for Prom though, and a few of them came back later to get other things and said it really lasted on them through sweating and dancing, so I guess that's good!

@Cydonian - Ya I think I am going to try Double Wear light next time there is a gift with purchase on, also I've heard nice things about the Futurist, do you like/recommend that one?

bittersee said... Best Blogger Tips

ya futurist is a good one for peeps with dry skin, as it is more moisturizing. for the DW though definitely use a primer of some sort, Idealist works with it very nicely, gives smoother application and prevents it from sticking and grabbing to flakey skin directly.

Great review! I've never tried Double Wear, but I do have Double Wear Light-not so much coverage as this one and I don't find it drying. But the lightest one is still a tad too dark for me, so I usually mix it with another foundation.

I like Double Wear Light, I didn't use Futurist all that much when I was there. It's geared towards middle aged/older women and anytime I had someone of that age come in, they were set in their ways with foundation lol. I had never heard any complaints though, and it blended nicely on the back of my hand when I did color matches on people.

@Cydonian - old cranky women! haha. I find that old lady foundation suits dry skin well though. Thanks for the feedback! :)

This foundation made my skin flake like crazy! I need moisturizing foundations.

@PoorCollegeStudent - I can definitely see how this could irritate dry/sensitive skin, not for everyday use, I am keeping this one for special events.

I'm SO happy you reviewed this. I've wanted to try this since I watched that Pixiwoo video and keep hearing other good things about it.

I'm going to wait until there's some kind of free-gift with purchase type deal at one of the Department stores and buy it!

I haven't tried that foundation, but have heard a bot about it still... The thing with my skin is that I think I need to let it settle down and stop being so unstable.. I'm so red, slightly oily in the T zone, dry and flakey in some areas, have super larges pores and get zit super easy... Ugh.

Thanks for the review! It's good to stay informed :)

Thanks for the review on this....I noticed that you compared this to MAC Studio Fix and I am using that now. It doesn't stay on my t-zone at all-even when I set it with a powder (and yes I use a primer). I am wondering if this will react the same way? Am I the only person with an out of control oily t-zone?

Justine (Productrater) said... Best Blogger Tips

@meredith - I have dry skin, so I cannot comment about oiliness. I think double wear is pretty resistant.

I really want to try this foundation someday, it's one of the few expensive ones I've been lemming! :) Thanks for the review Justine ;) x

i just discovered your blog and i am impressed! i'm pale too and you have so many reviewes on pale foundations. because i'm living in europe i have to order foundation on line so i was wondering if shade linen was too dark for you or it was a good match?thank you and sorry for my bad english! :)

Justine (Productrater) said... Best Blogger Tips

@Anonymous - Linen is quite yellow, if you are really pale I think 'Bone' is a good option. Linen works on me, but I should of gone a bit lighter I think. Check our temptalia's foundation matrix too, it goes over what shade is best in every foundation out there.
