Monthly Faves: September 2010

October is here and I haven't done last month's favourites yet.... so here goes. I've had a difficult month personally and it's still going on, so makeup hasn't been all that important this month, I've had other things on my mind, but I like doing these posts so here is what I liked and loved for the month of September.

Sigma F50 - I use this to apply the MAC Pro Longwear foundation, and alternate this between the MAC 187 and I can't tell much of a difference, so when one is dirty, the one is clean and I use them one after the other basically, I don't like using dirty brushes, it's kinda ewwy to me.

MAC Pro Longwear Foundation - This is a new product this month, and it's fabulous! I love the finish and coverage this gives and the colour match of NC15 is perfect for me. Definitely my most used foundation this month.

Clean and Clear Persa Gel 5 - I am still experiencing breakouts on my chin area and it's getting me down, and this product is the only thing that helps, so it's been in heavy rotation this month. Stress = zits for me, and women in general.

Milani HD Advance Concealer - I will do a full review of this soon, but this is definitely one of my favourite concealers, it is light and doesn't give huge coverage, but I am a big fan of the packaging, it feels glamorous and expensive.

MAC Select Cover up - It's been a heavy concealing month so here is another concealer that I've been loving, this one provides great coverage and it's very sanitary to use since it comes in a squeezy tube with a precise applicator tip on it. I use this for under the eyes.

MAC Fun and Games Blush - I actually bought this blush recently from allcosmeticswholesale.com, it was a limited edition item during the Hello Kitty collection. I wasn't even into MAC when that came out. I love this blush, it's my favourite blush colour..peach! and I can never have enough peach blushes. This does have some shimmer in it.

Garnier Skin Renew Radiance Moisture Cream - I prefer creams over lotions as a daily moisturizer for my face, I love this one because it has that cooling effect, is light and absorbs quickly. There is actually a new version of this out, the Moisture Rescue Refreshing Gel Cream, which I am planning on getting next.

What were your faves of this month?

Review: Clean and Clear Persa-Gel 5

This is like a miracle worker for destroying acne flareups. I have used several spot treatment products such as Clean and Clear's Advantage Acne Spot Treatment and Neutrogena's Rapid Clear Acne Eliminating Spot Gel, but this one has given me the best results. This product is described on the Clean and Clear website as "This #1 pharmacist-recommended acne treatment contains maximum strength Benzoyl Peroxide acne medication. The unique formula goes to work immediately, releasing the medicine deep into the pores where pimples start." It contains 5% Benzoyl Peroxide, which is a medication that helps fight acne-causing bacteria, and helps to eliminate and prevent acne.

I have to admit, I have had more acne in my mid-late 20's then I ever did in my teen years, and the majority of it is on my chin. I have an area on my chin where they always pop up, and it's a constantly healing while new acne forms type of disaster area. It really bothers me because I generally do not break out anywhere else and my skin is quite dry. Dry skin gets acne too though, believe it or not. And the zits on my chin are the painful, under the skin types that linger. I have read that many women in my age group experience the same problems and apparently it's caused by hormones. I am not currently on any birth control and have not been for years, so I don't know what is causing it. I have tried peppermint tea (read that helps somewhere), wash my face twice a day, exfoliate regularly, and do not wear makeup unless I need to. I think maybe the cause is how I constantly switch my products around, I should really stick to one skincare line or product and let my skin adjust. I am not dermatologist though, I am just learning on my own. If anyone here has pointers, please let me know.
Anyway, now that the nastiness is over, Clean and Clear Persa-Gel 5 for me is a wonderful product. This was about $8 at Shoppers Drug Mart in Canada. It has 5% Benzoyl Peroxide and as far as I know, in Canada we don't have the 10% available over the counter. I would of tried that one instead, does the 10% work better? The Persa-Gel comes in a squeezy tube, the product itself is a white substance, I just squeeze out a tiny about and dab it on the monsters and blend it in. I have read that people use this all over their face everyday, I've only used it for spot treatment. Is it safe to use all over your face? seems like it would dry out a lot.

I got a new one of those under the chin pimples (to add to the collection) and put this on over night. In the morning, the swelling and size went down a lot, it's still there but greatly improved. The only thing is, this will dry out the area around the zit. I noticed once it dried, it left a kind of white powdery residue, which is definitely a downside to this product, but if you use it at night, this isn't a problem at all. I did find that after using it for a few days, the zit would bleed too, not sure if that is normal. If I push down on it too, I can feel fluid inside which is what is still causing the zit to be there. With repeated use, the zit will clear up altogether I think. Skincare is a very personal thing and varies person to person, but for me, this product works.

Tag: Favourite Drugstore Products

So I am a huge bargain shopper. Most of my makeup collection is from the drugstore. And why not? I can get a ton more products for less money than buying high-end stuff. I love my MAC, NARS, Chanel, YSL and other brands, but I gotta really ponder over products that cost a lot of money, whereas with drugstore I can just grab and not be too disappointed when the product does not work out for me. However, over time, I have found many items from the drugstore which I really like and will share these products with you today.

Neutrogena Oil Free Eye Makeup Remover
neutrogena eye makeup remover
As you can tell, that is in fact an empty bottle. I am just recently out of my bottle of this product, I use it everyday and it's been a fave of mine for years.  I am using the Lancome bifacial right now, it was a freebie in a gift with purchase, and I know people swear by this, but the idea behind it is the same as this Neutrogena product and like 1/3 of the price. This Neutrogena eye makeup remover has that dual liquid thing going on, you have to shake it to combine the two. It's gentle, takes off waterproof mascara. This is something I would rebuy over and over again.

Revlon Colorstay Blemish Concealer
revlon blemish concealer
The Revlon Blemish concealer serves two purposes, it is a concealer that you apply over acne, but it also has salicylic acid, so it doubles up as a treatment to help them heal as well. I have this in fair, the lightest colour. As you can tell it is very well used and beat up, the applicator on mine is bent and cracked.

Maybelline Mineral Power Concealer

Maybelline's Mineral Power concealer is a good one. This is probably my favourite liquid concealer, the colour is good and it goes on smooth and is nice for under the eyes, the coverage isn't spectacular compared to some cream concealers, but it is alright.

Revlon Super Lustrous Lipgloss
revlon super lustrous lipgloss
I loooove the Revlon Super Lustrous lipglosses, they are pretty pigmented, some in a variety of colours and have nice packaging. Recently with the daydreamer collection, there were several new limited edition colours, I picked up three of them (you can see them on the bottom of the pic above).

Maybelline Mascara in General
maybelline mascara
Maybelline makes my favourite mascaras, here are some of the ones that I have, left to right: Volume Express Turbo Boost, The Falsies, Colossal, Lash Stiletto Voluptuous (new fave) and Full and Soft. Their mascaras are affordable, give length, separate well and volumize. I will continue buying any new ones that they come out with.

Face Primer Alternatives
drugstore primers monistat, rimmel and revlon
Primer is something that isn't necessary in my opinion, but it does help keep your makeup on, and for summer that is more important than ever. The ingredients in high-end primers such as Smashbox are also in these drugstore ones, so they do the same thing and are much cheaper. The Monistat anti-chafing gel is a cult favourite to use on your face as a primer, the other two are Rimmel's Fix & Perfect and Revlon's Beyond Natural Smoothing Primer.

Revlon Nail Polish
revlon nail polish
I'd have to say Revlon makes the best drugstore nail polishes, most of them apply nicely and there are lots of colours available. There are scented ones too, which is neat. I have a pretty big collection of Revlon polishes, some of the ones I have are above.

Clean and Clear Advantage Acne Spot Treatment

This product is good to use when you sense a zit coming along and then to apply it at night to help heal it faster. Be careful though, as it will dry out that area of your skin. You only need a tiny bit of this product and I have had this tube for a long time and it hardly even looks used.

Cetaphil Skincare
cetaphil skincare
Cetaphil is a really good quality, affordable skincare line that can be bought at the drugstore. Their products are very gentle, and good for those with sensitive skin. I use their skin cleanser regularly, I accidentally bought the oil skin type, my skin is not oily, it's dry, but this cleanser is so gentle that it doesn't dry out my skin at all. I also have here their spf 15 daily moisturizer, which comes in a sleek bottle with a nice pump on it, they also have an spf 50 type.

L'oreal Lash Serum
l'oreal lash serum
Gone are the days when we need to use expensive prescription lash growth products to enhance our eyelashes, the L'oreal Lash Serum works really well to help condition your lashes and make them appear thicker and healthier. I have definitely noticed a change in mine and was very skeptical of this product at the start. I have a full review of this, that you can read here.

I've tried to keep this short, and only chose 10 products, there were many more that I could have chosen. What are your favourite drugstore products?

Anyone feel the earthquake in Ontario today!?
