Review: Sigma F86 Synthetic Tapered Kabuki

Sigma recently came out with several new brushes for their Sigmax line, this is a collection of synthetic bristled brushes. I love the F80, F82 and F86 for foundation application, they apply the fullest coverage possible quickly and blend nicely. The great thing about these is they don't shed or smell because they are synthetic, they also don't absorb product like a natural hair brush would, although I do have a hard time washing product out because they are so densely packed (and drying them sucks too). Today's review is the F86 Synthetic Tapered Kabuki. Even though I am in the Sigma Affiliate Program, I did purchase this brush myself, I was curious about it and have been using it for about a month now.

The shape of this brush intrigues me, it's like an egg. The Sigma website describes that this brush is "ideal for using powders and higlighter under the eye and cheek area. The dense precise tip of this brush enhances cheek highlighting and contouring for a flawless application." I had hoped to use this brush for liquid foundation but, I find it's really difficult, I am used to a flat top brush like the F80, a stippling brush or a traditional foundation brush. This brush is far too pointy to use for foundation in my opinion, unless you are just applying foundation to small areas of your face like around the nose and eyes, it's nice for that. I have been using it for contouring and it's great for that since it gets right in the hallow of your cheeks. Several youtubers mention it works well for cream bronzer like the Chanel Soleil De Tan. I also bought the smaller version of this brush, the P86 (review on that later).

Review: Sigma Dry and Shape System

Today's review is the Sigma Dry and Shape System. This is one of their newest products, it's meant as an aid in helping to dry your makeup brushes quicker and shape it while it does. When it comes to me, I am not too fussy when I wash my brushes, I use anti-bacterial hand soap, the same stuff that I use when I wash my hands in the bathroom (one from Bath and Body Works). I don't mind how long it takes because I normally leave them dry overnight. I have so many brushes that if some are dirty, it's not a big deal, I just grab another one.

What I normally do is wash them in soap, rinse them out with tap water, then tap and soak all the excess water out with a bath towel or paper towel. Then I leave them on the side of the sink to dry. Sometimes very dense brushes like the Flat Top F80 are still a bit damp the next day, but it doesn't bother me to use it since I only use those with liquid foundation. I was curious if the Dry and Shape would make much of a difference in my routine, and I was skeptical if it would. I have read people ask how you clean the brush roll itself, since it can become unsanitary with the dirty water spilling out. The brush roll is made of synthetic material, so it's easy to wipe clean. If your brushes are really dirty you can wipe them down first on something, ensuring all the water or cleanser is out of it, then place it in the Dry and Shape. None of my brushes leak because I make sure I wipe them dry first.

Review: Sigma Dare Eyeshadow Palette

I promised that I would review all 3 Sigma eyeshadow palettes, the other day I reviewed the Bare palette and today it's Dare. This palette is definitely the widest and "out there" least wearable palette out of the three in my opinion. When I first looked at this palette, I thought when would I ever wear these colours? The red ones I would definitely never wear, but if you looking for something different maybe you could love this palette? These palettes retail for $35 each on Sigma's website.

Review: Sigma Bare Eyeshadow Palette

Sigma recently came out with new eyeshadow palettes. If you remember back in the day when they first started getting big Sigma used to have a makeup line, so it's nice that they are bringing out makeup items again. There are three palettes available: Bare (neutral tones), Dare (warm bright colours) and Flare (green and purples). These palettes are $35 each. I was sent all three palettes for review and will be doing separate posts on all three. It's just easier to do three because I want to do separate swatches and talk about the brushes that you get etc.

NEW Sigma Cleansing and Polishing Tool Unboxing

I love getting packages in the mail and today I had a really nice surprise! As part of being in their affiliate program, Sigma sent me their newest product, the New Cleansing and Polishing Tool! Sigma is known for their makeup brush line, but they are coming out with lots of new products. This post is in no means a review, I just got this today and while opening it took these pictures for you guys. I will go over how it looks and what it's supposed to do.

When I first heard about this product, I thought Sigma was doing a cheaper knockoff of the Clarisonic (Sigma claims their version is better). I did some research on the Clarisonic and what makes it different and more effective than all these other rotating brush products is that it's 'sonic', "Clarisonic systems use a patented sonic frequency of more than 300 movements per second to gently, yet thoroughly remove 6X more makeup and 2X more dirt and oil than cleansing with your hands alone." I've never used a Clarisonic, but I have used drugstore dupes of it, like the Neutrogena Healthy Skin Rejuvenator. Basically what this product is meant to do is be an applicator for your skincare, you place your favourite cleanser or exfoliator on the brush head and then apply it to your face. The brush head vibrates or rotates and massaging the product into your skin, exfoliating dead skin cells and exposing fresh healthy skin.

Review: Sigma E45 Small Tapered Blending Brush

Thanks everyone for entering my Sigma giveaway, the contest is now closed. A brush that I really enjoy from Sigma that doesn't get much hype is the E45, the Small Tapered Blending Brush. It's great for putting colour in the crease and blending it. This brush is very similar to the MAC 226 brush, which was a limited edition brush from the Blond Brunette Redhead collection. If you missed that collection and are craving a brush like that, this is a great one to pick up, it's only $9.

This brush is like a shorter, more tapered version of the E40, and not as precise as the E30 pencil brush. When I first bought it, the tapered part was more defined, after washing and using it, the find the bristles have fluffed out a bit more. The pictures above are after washing, it was pretty dirty and I didn't want to show a dirty brush in pictures here, that's just gross. Mine did not bleed dye or shed upon washing or use, I do occasionally pull out stray hairs though. I'd recommend this brush for those of you with small eyes since the brush head itself is quite small.

I bought this brush back in the summer, here is the original post and also notice how the shape has significantly changed over time. The second picture was taken when I received it and the top is now. Although I don't mind the change, I wish it had stayed pointy like that. I think if you keep your brushes in a brush guard, tightly condensed, you can keep that shape, otherwise they do tend to fluff out naturally.

Here are the eye brushes that I use on a regular basis for applying lid and crease colours. I don't like using the E40 for my eyes since it gets all over the place, it's far too large for that, I use it for blending my concealer. But the E45 is my favourite for applying crease colour since it's tapered enough and it's soft on the eyes. For a more precise crease application, I use a pencil brush.

What's your favourite eye brush? Do you use the E45?

Review: Sigma Makeup Naughty in Black Travel Kit

Today's review is the Sigma Makeup "Naughty in Black" Travel Kit. This one comes with 7 travel sized brushes with short handles, plus you get one free brush, if you buy the black kit you get the F50 (pictured above) and if you buy the pink "Nice in Pink" set you get a free foundation brush, so you get 8 brushes altogether. This brush set retails for $49 on Sigma's website. Currently you ca get it for 10% off with the code "STYLE2011" (this code works on any item). Also with purchases over $30, you'll also get the free E25 travel sized brush. So it works out to about $5-6 a brush here, plus shipping.

The kit comes in a black clutch that holds all your brushes, it has a hidden magnetic piece on the top that keeps it closed. There is also a small zippered compartment on the inside where you can place extra brushes. I wish the pouch was a bit roomier, as I don't keep my brushes in here anymore since I find the hairs get squished, but it's nice for travel.

Here are the brushes that you get, 4 face brushes: F30 (SS150), F40 (SS168), F60 (SS190),  F70 (SS194) and then 3 eye brushes: E55 (SS239), E40 (SS224), E30 (SS219). Together with the F50 (SS187) it's pretty much all the brushes that you need for a complete everyday look. I think this set is quite well organized. I have included the old numbering here because I thought it would be easier, I still have a hard time remembering the F and E numbers. Often times I wonder if the travel sized versions are as good as the full size, so I will compare that here.

The F30 powder brush in this set is much smaller than the original F30. I would say it's more comparable to their blush/powder brush the F10 (in middle of top picture), but a bit fuller and fluffier. This one has the most shedding and bleeding issues when washed, since it is so large and black.

The F40 contour brush is pretty comparable to the original, a bit thinner and less fluffy. This works well for contouring or blush application.

The foundation brush, F60 is pretty much identical as well. I prefer to use this short handled one for my liquid foundation (if I use this, prefer my flat top brush however). I hope in the future Sigma makes a flat-top F80 short handled version, that would be awesome since so many people love that brush.

The E40 is nicer than the full size one, it's more tapered and less fluffed out, but that could just be because it's new and hasn't enlarged yet. I use these brushes for under-eye concealer.

E70 concealer brush is slightly longer here too (bottom brush), which is better in my opinion.

E55, eyeshadow brush is basically the same too. I like that the handle on this one is fatter than the original, it's easier to grip.

E30, concealer brush is better in this set too, it's longer, more tapered and thinner.

F50, duo fibre brush in this set is much different too, as you can tell compared to the full size F50 and the F55, it's basically in between in terms of size. I find it a lot floppier than the F50 too. I wouldn't suggest the one in this kit for foundation application, but it could work for blush.

I like this and prefer it to the Premium Travel Kit because I find the brushes more basic, ones that I would reach for more. All in all, the brushes are definitely different then the original full sized ones, some for the better. If you can't afford the full sized ones, or prefer the ease of the short handles, I would definitely check this kit out.

Review: Sigma Make Me Crazy Brush Kit

Sigma recently came out with new brush kits, these are the "Make Me Up" collection and come in 4 colours: black (Make Me Classy), purple (Make Me Crazy), pink (Make Me Blush) and blue (Make Me Cool). These kits include their 12 most popular brushes in Sigma's professional brush kit plus a handy brush holder. The main reason why I wanted to get this set was for the brush holder. At the moment, I keep my brushes on my bathroom sink, the most used ones that is, and the rest (kinda used ones) are under my sink in a ELF large brush holder (recommend that as well). I know it's bad to keep your makeup brushes in the bathroom because of the moisture and all that, however I do not shower in that bathroom anyway (we have two), but I do use the sink obviously so I know my brushes are probably getting dirty from that. That's why I like this brush holder because it can be closed by putting the one part on the top and securing it together, then your brushes are covered and safe.

These kits retail for $99 US on the Sigma website, which is the same price of the 12 piece in the brush roll. I prefer the brush holder that comes with this because it's super handy.

Here is the brush container closed with the brushes inside. This makes for great storage and you can even take this with you on travels. The container is a quite hard plastic, it won't bend or tear. I picked out the purple (Make Me Crazy) kit because purple is one of my favourite colours. I was going to get the black, but thought why get more black brushes? This way it adds a pop of colour to my brush collection.

Here are the 12 brushes that you get, they come with purple handles and pink ferrules, I think they look really nice. The numbering system is the same and the writing is in a holographic style (the shine on my flash is picking this up a bit here). I will now compare these brushes with the regular black ones that come in the 12 professional brush kit. If I haven't included a comparison brush below it means that I don't own it.

F30 - Large Powder brush: This brush is great for applying powder foundation or all over setting powder. Compared to the original F30 (mine is SS150 but it doesn't matter) I found the newer one to have a bit more rounded, tapered bristles, softness was the same, it bled some colour upon initial washing as did the black one. The black brush is a tad taller than the purple one.
Edit: The purple one continues to bleed dye as I wash it and is still quite stinky, I think with continued exposure to air it this should dissipate and the dye will stop.

F50 - Duo Fibre: This can give that airbrush look when applying liquid foundation. In this case, the purple one is a little bit taller. I feel like the purple one is also slightly less dense, is more floppy on the face, perhaps it has less black bristles.

F40 - Large Angled Contour: I use this to apply blush. Not any differences amongst these two that I could spot, the black one is slightly taller.

F60 - Foundation: Basic foundation painter brush, I use this for light foundation application sometimes, prefer flat top brushes personally. The black one is slightly taller, and it has a more defined tip on the bristles, whereas the purple is more rounded.

E55 - Eye Shading: Basic lid eyeshadow brush. Purple one is slightly taller, and the bristles are slightly taller too. Density is the same, not scratchy on the eyes at all.

E30 - Pencil: Good eyeshadow brush for applying precise colour to the crease. The black brush is quite a bit taller. Purple bristles are slightly more pointy, but not really to notice.

E40 - Tapered Blending: I use this one for blending concealer and setting powder under the eyes. These two brushes are probably the most similar in the bunch, brush length is the same and fluffiness and size of bristles is very similar. The purple one continued to bleed colour much longer than the black one did while washing, always wash your brushes before using!

F70 - Concealer: Good brush at precision concealing for spots and acne. These two are very similar too, brush length is the same. Purple brush has slightly more tapered bristles.

E60 - Large Shader: Good brush for cream shadow or pigment application. I don't own the original black brush but I have read that this purple one has a much larger head.

E70 - Medium Angled Shading: Good for applying crease colour or applying lid colour. I don't have the original one in this either, but it seems like a nice brush.

E65 - Small Angle: Used to apply eyeliner. I don't wear eyeliner, so I don't use brushes like this, but it's nice. Don't have the original.

E05 - Eyeliner: I don't use this brush either, same explanation as above, but this is a nice quite dense eyeliner brush. Only thing is, if you put the plastic cover on this, be careful when you take it off because it can bend the bristles on the sides.

And here are all the brushes, black and purples ones in the brush holder. Face brushes on the left and eyebrushes on the right. Not too sure how I am going to organize them yet, but I know some people separate their clean and dirty (to be cleaned) ones.

In conclusion, I see no real differences with these purple "Make Me Crazy" kit brushes except for the brush lengths themselves, only a few brushes were the same length, they seem to be all over the place. Not a big deal, but I am very critical of makeup products and I will point these discrepancies out. I know Sigma brushes are factory made so there probably isn't so much focus on quality control regarding size of handles. Also, the black ones overall feel heavier, that is probably because the ferrule on those is more of a metal, whereas the purple ones are aluminum looking. The ferrule is more pinched looking on the black ones too. I think these brushes are nice to have if you don't already have the 12 piece kit, or you want the brush holder.
