Review: Almay Wake Up Hydrating Makeup Powder

Since I have dry/dehydrated skin, I find it very difficult to find a powder that goes not emphasize my dry areas and more often than not, I do not "set" my makeup with powder for this reason. Powders make me look ashy or like I am wearing caked on powder basically, and that's not a pretty look. Some even cause my skin to itch and feel tight. Almay's Hydrating Makeup does not do that, it has this awesome cooling, wet feeling that I really enjoy and is unlike any other powder I've ever used. This product is identical to the Revlon Colorstay Aqua Mineral makeup (they came out at the same time), but for a bit less money, hence why I chose this one.

I have it in the colour 020 Buff, I think I should of picked up the one in Ivory, but since this product gives very little coverage, it is forgiving if you have the wrong shade. This product is advertised as a powder foundation, but it's really not, since it gives very light coverage, I use this as a setting powder over my liquid foundation. As with all loose powders, I never take the plastic cover off completely because too much product comes out, you can tell I only have three holes showing in mine, this ensures it does not get messy. Hopefully you can tell in the picture (click to enlarge) this product has shimmers in it, which at first turned me off, but it's okay now.

The powder comes with a little synthetic brush attached to the top lid, it's really small as you can tell (compared to ELF Powder brush underneath it). I don't use the brush, but I like how it's compact and stays secured to the package. I find the ELF Powder brush is perfect for this product, as it fits in the lid completely, I just dab it and then apply it all over my face.

It was difficult to get a good picture of this on my hand because the powder basically dissolves as it hits your skin, but you can kind of tell here. This powder feels really nice on the skin, especially if you have dry skin like me. It actually does feel wet when you apply it, really cooling like water, like you just want to stand there putting it on over and over again! I love it. I would repurchase this just for the cooling effect that it gives. I know Prescriptives makes a magic powder like this, and MAC had one in their Venomous Villains collection (but it has the ugly packaging), apparently in May they are bringing out their liquid powders permanently so I will definitely pick them up then. For now, I am loving my Almay powder, I've used it almost everyday since buying it.

Have you tried this product? Or have any recommendations for other hydrating powders?

I watched a review of the Revlon version of this product and she hated the shimmers. How do you think the shimmers look on your skin? Are they really noticeable? I probably will not purchase this because I want a powder foundation with some coverage but I'm just curious :)

Hmm very interesting! I've been seeing this everywhere lately but have a LOT of powders right now! This sounds great for dry skin!

Have you tried Smashbox Halo?

@Angelicbeauty - the shimmers do not bother me too much, but you can notice them a bit. This won't give you coverage though.

@Shaylee - I thought about getting Halo but it's $$$ like $70 right? This one is really great for dry skin, main reason why I love it.

The ''cooling'' effect must be really nice during summer! :)
But i'm not sure with my type of skin if it will work!
Nice review,thanks!!

This sounds like something I might have to try, especially as this winter wreaks havoc on my skin. I am a little nervous about the shimmer part though.

@Tracy - Not sure why they felt the need to put shimmers in it, it would of been perfect without it.

this sounds really interesting. i have combination skin, so parts of my face are dry whereas other are oily, so i'm not sure if this would really work, but i may give it a shot anyway - just to experience this cooling effect ;) thanks for the review!
