Review: Origins VitaZing SPF 15 Energy Boosting Moisturizer

I am late on the bandwagon for this product. I remember it being hyped up a lot on youtube back in the summer. A few months back The Bay in Canada had a promotion for Origins, this product was down to $35 CAD (down from $44) and you got 3 free samples with it too (of a choice of three groupings). I am always down for free samples and a discount, so I couldn't give it up. This was my first time trying anything from Origins, so it was nice to be given a few sample treats as well.

Here are the samples that I got which I am loving 1) Checks and Balances Frothy Face Wash 2) Brighter by Nature Skin Tone Correcting Serum 3) Ginzing Refreshing Eye Cream. The eye cream I would definitely buy in full size in the future, although this sample will last me a long time still. I am looking forward to trying out more Origins products in the future, the Mega Mushroom stuff is apparently good.

VitaZing is described as an "energizing, mulit-tasking moisturizer that gives skin an instant zing of visible vitality and vibrance. Sheer tint-release formula magically transforms and perfects to create even, flawless looking skin. SPF 15. Oil-free. Apply before sun exposure." The product is a reasonably thick cream that comes out white with tiny grey beads (click to zoom image). Like all Origins products, VitaZing has a sort of woodsy sunscreen scent, which I personally like. I love the idea of a multi-tasking product, this serves as a moisturizer, and a substitute for foundation since it gives a evening tint to your skin, if you're in a rush or don't feel like wearing a full face of makeup, you can opt for this instead.

Then when you blend it in, the warm of your fingers dissolves the product into a skin colour. You can probably tell it's quite orange on my skin. And that's my issue with this product, it's marketed as a sort of 'one fits all', but the colour is not universal at all in my opinion. If you're around NC20, I think this will work fine and be bendable and undectable on your skin, but for me, it's too dark. When I had a tan in the summer (fake of course), this would of been perfect, but on my ghostly pale skin, it's too orange. It reminds of the Revlon Skin Matching Makeup or Almay Smart Balance (I reviewed previously), which had the same issue, the colours were too dark. However those other two, don't have anything beneficial skincare qualities to your skin, if I remember correctly (VitaZing contains Mangosteen which is a free radical scavenger).

This has a dewy finish that feel like it's ever fully dry. It feels nice on dry skin, but for those with oily skin, you will have to powder for sure. The coverage is sheer and while touted as a tinted moisturizer, I wouldn't use this as one, it's a moisturizer (that happens to have colour to it). And as a moisturizer it works nicely, I would place this under my foundation or powder (to lighten the colour).

Have you tried this product? What Origins products do you like?

  1. Hey you got one! I hated this stuff. I have dry skin, but it broke me out every time I used it. Gave it away.
I have the Mega Mushroom line and it's wonderful!

  2. @Tracy - Eeek, it broke you out? I wonder what's in it, couldn't find too much information on the ingredients.

  4. I have VitaZing, too! And I like it a lot!!! It's a great morning moisturizer for my dry skin, but since it's only SPF15, I need to apply another SPF40 sunscreen, but I don't mind. If I don't go out or feel like putting makeup, then VitaZing would be my last step of the morning skin routine!

I also wanted to try Ginzing eye cream too!

  5. I'm so glad you finally reviewed this! You seem to always have the same taste in makeup and skincare as me. This would be so orange on me too I bet.

  8. I grabbed a sample of it for free from the counter to try it out first - they give you like 2 weeks supply in a little jar, which is what I recommend you do, before making the purchase :) so and FYI to other girls! Just ask for a sample & they should provide you with some.

so far, so good - I'm a bit darker so I was even worried it would be too light

  9. @FunkyCrew - True, you'd be surprised the amount of products that I buy that do not work for me, that's part of what I do on this blog though, test out products, some of them don't work out, it's the fun in it I suppose. I rarely return products, unless it's MAC or something with a great return policy.

  10. I guess but unless you get this product for free for a test drive, than what do you do with it? Do you swap products with fellow bloggers?

It's just esp for this cream, it's def not cheap, when it's at original price.

Btw I'd totally grab it from you if you don't anticipate using it again ;)

  11. @FunkyCrew - I keep it in a drawer with all the other rejects! I will save it for the summer when I am darker. And ya it is expensive, part of why my reviews have slowed down over the past few months, I just can't afford it.

  13. I love this product!! I bought it without knowing that is colored and was amazed when I first used it and my skin suddenly looked all radiant!! I'm pretty pale myself but it works for me.. I mean this sin't a foundation so I use only a little bit to make my skin radiant under the makeup and it works. It really glows nicely =)
