Next, I know I said I wouldn't get this but I did anyway with a $5 coupon, the L'oreal Studio Secrets Magic Perfecting Base. It was like $8 with coupon. I also got the last Ecotools Eyeshadow brush that they had, this was around $4. I have the original one and it's much different, the bristles are hard sympathetic on that one and this one is a huge improvement. I will do a comparison review soon.
Now onto the rant, that's why you read this post right? Okay, so after watching Pixiwoo's fabulous 'Guide to Clinique foundations' video on youtube (link above), I decided to make a stop at my Sears Clinique counter. They have a gift with purchase on now, so a good time to buy a new foundation. I went in primarily wanting to get the Acne Solutions foundation. I told the girl that I have dry skin, but I do tend to break out along my chin and want something with moderate-full coverage. I know Clinique tends to not give much coverage, and this foundation gives a fair amount. The girl asks me if my skin feels tight or just looks dry? I tell her well it's tight after I wash it but no, it looks and feels dry. Then she tells me that my skin is not dry, I just need to exfoliate and get the dead skin cells off. It's not dry? I do exfoliate on a regular basis, I find exfoliating makes my skin even drier if I overdo it. If you take a look at my skin, it looks dry, I am no makeup guru here but I think it's obvious. Is there any truth in this? She then tells me their 3 step program can help with this yadda yadda yadda, I have tried their 3 step and am not interested.
Okay whatever, she tries the Acne Solutions makeup on me, chooses a shade that I think is far too dark for me (03 Fair Neutral) whatever it looks fine I suppose (I could always return it). I go to pay, oh they don't have that colour in stock, or the one lighter down. Okay, what other foundations would you recommend? Superfit? she don't have any colours available, Superbalanced? She says that gives natural coverage. She recommend their Oil-free foundation (can't remember the name). I am getting irritated now so I say fine I will get that one. She rings me through, oh it's only $26 and you need to spend $28.50 to qualify for the free gift, would you like something else? Oh man... okay I will just come back another time! So fed up at this point.
I think when they have gift with purchase promotions they should really be well stocked with their products, or else they are losing sales, as they did with me. I would order online (probably easier) but their shade selection is often out of stock too and I'd have to pay for shipping. Overall, I was really annoyed with Clinique.
What foundations would you girls recommend from Clinique? or ones to avoid?
The Acne foundation flaked on me and I have combination skin, so if you have dry skin, test it first before buying full size. Others foundations that Pixiwoo mentioned might not be as widely available outside the UK. I agree that counters don't stock up before GWP promos. Sorry you couldn't find a good buy
ReplyDeleteClinique makeup has never worked for me, ha I wouldn't recommend any of it. My skin is combination in the spring/summer and dry in the fall/winter. When my skin is going through it's dryness I use a tinted moisturizer (tarte is really really good!) and when I want a bit more coverage I add some MAC studio fix fluid to it. Maybe all this hassle at Clinique was for the better :P
ReplyDeleteYea I agree with the others, me and a friend tried their acne foundation for a while and we both just had blah skin still... I'm constantly struggling with dry skin and I DO exfoliate and yes also doesn't matter.
ReplyDeleteSo I totally feel your rant!
@Halifax - That's what I've been reading a lot... I don't know how they make foundations and claim they are good for all skin types, that can't be more false.
ReplyDelete@Hauls and Reviews - I've been using tinted moisturizers a lot lately because they tend to be good for my skin, as in, they do not make my dry areas more pronounced like liquid foundation does, and powder foundations forget about it, that never works for me.
@Crystal - Thanks for the support! Having dry skin sucks and it gets worse as the weather gets colder too. :(
I tried a sample of their Redness Solutions foundation and now it's #1 on my list... moisturizing, but oil free (so should be good for dry skin/acne?) and really good coverage, great for redness and discoloration.
ReplyDeleteThat's too bad about the bad costumer servie though :(
Val
@Val - what's the coverage like on that one? It's a liquid foundation? I have heard about that one, it's quite new right?
ReplyDeleteMy skin both feels dry, and looks dry. Trying to find that right foundation's a a nightmare. I've never had Clinique foundations, and I don't think I'll get them anytime soon.
ReplyDeleteAs for now, proper moisturizing and Pierre Cardin weirdo foundation. The foundation's oilfree (I know what? Suits dry skin?) and it does feel like there's something on my face, but it doesn't seem to highlight the dry parts on my face at all (I always have dry flaky spots), it looks natural and was easy to apply. I've only wore it once for the day, so still to see if my skin likes it or will break out.
And I fully agree about the fact stocks should be fully armed when giving out gifts :)
Thanks for posting! :)
Sad to hear you had a bad experience. :-(
ReplyDeleteThe 3-step (plus Redness Line) does wonders for me.
I used their Almost Makeup (Liquid) for years until I found BE, which I think screwed up my skin (the BE). Since then I've had to use something with much more coverage, though my skin is getting back to "normal", after 3 years.
Anyways, I recently picked up the new Redness Solutions Foundation (for the GWP, lol) and am really liking it. It's a liquid, in a bottle and consistency similar to MUFE Mat Velvet+. I find it has really good coverage and is buildable. There weren't many shade choices, but I was matched to the 2nd from the lightest. It didn't surprise me too much, as I'm usually matched to NC15 in MAC, but these companies really need to make lighter foundations! I'm not pale by any means, so I really feel sorry for those that are. :-(
I've actually got clinique's superbalanced makeup (I have combination to oily skin) and it's not that great. it's got medium coverage and all its so different when they try it on you at the counter compared to doing it at home. so far I haven't been happy with clinique's foundation, I think you should look elsewhere. and that clinique girl sounds so annoying and not know what she's talking about! *pats for you* D=
ReplyDelete@MUA Lindsay - I am NC15 too! I will look into this redness solution foundation, I didn't see it at this clinique counter at all, she had a lot of different foundations, but didn't have anything to offer me really.
ReplyDeleteI seriously hate dealing with makeup counters. I find most of the employees irritating and not really interesting in helping me find what I want.
ReplyDeleteI have oily in the summer, oily/combo in the winter and the Clinique counter told me I needed a lotion that turned my face into an oil slick.
I have their superbalanced and think it's okay. Medium coverage - it was just a touch too moisturizing for my face but probably good on other people.
Sorry about your bad clinique counter experience. Go back to a different store and get rematched. Then purchase directly from Clinique. clinique.com was doing a 6 piece bonus and you got to pick from a lot of different choices.
ReplyDeleteI use the Perfectly Real foundation. I have extremely dry skin. It has great coverage when I apply with a beauty blender. I only use the clinique moisturizer. I also only like their mascaras. I'm currently using High Lengths and High Impact.
I did a make-up bag post on my blog were I talked about the clinique products I own.
@Alicia - ya I was definitely considering superbalanced, it sounds good!
ReplyDelete@Allison - Cool I will check out your blog. The high lengths one is part of the gift with purchase at sears (in canada) right now I definitely want to try that mascara.
Eek! That was not a nice experience! I haven't tried any of their foundations because something similar happened when I went to buy one. They had almost nothing in stock. Oh well.
ReplyDeleteThank you for all the comments on my blog!! I figured this would be the easiest way to respond, so this will be super long. lol
L'Oreal Extra Collagen is the BEST mascara I've tried yet, and I've been through a lot ( I kinda stopped writing about it on my blog because I just kept saying the same thing, 'this one is good but not as good as extra collagen!)
Halo Powder is great, but I have nowhere near dry skin so I don't really know if it would work for you. There have been so many mixed reviews on it, i would say go in to shoppers with no powder on early in the morning one day and get them to test it on you and see how it fares!
i did go to Lakhead. How did you know? I guess if you're from Canada you'd kinda pick up on it since I said I went to school in Northern Ontario. lol
Are you from SO? If so are you going to IMATS?
Anyway, sorry for this novel! I've added you to my blog roll - I love meeting new Canadian bloggers!
xx
@emily - I recognized the landscape and put the two together, it looked lakehead-esque. I went to Waterloo, I am actually moving to Toronto next month.
ReplyDeleteNo imats for me, I've heard about it on youtube for years, but never gone or know how to get tickets or anything.
Thanks for the comments!
if you go to imatsshow.com/toronto you can buy tickets there. . that reminds me that i need to buy mine! lol
ReplyDeleteI might be moving to toronto too! I had an interview last week and should hear back in a few days. fingers crossed!
Totally random, I live in K-W, back home with the rents. . how cool of me. lol
This was really helpful because Ive actually been spending a lot of time trying to find a few new foundations for the changing season :)
ReplyDeleteGreat post, thanks hun!
